“I have to choose lions. It is the lion’s unique social nature that fascinates and intrigues me. All the lionesses in a pride are related: mothers and daughters, aunts and nieces, grandmothers and great grandmothers, half-sisters and cousins. The individual relationships among this ‘sisterhood’ is endlessly fascinating to behold.
Jonathan and I have followed the Marsh Pride in the Maasai Mara in Kenya since 1977. By focusing on one pride of lions, you really get to understand just how different each member of the pride is. By doing that, you can begin to be able to unravel the complex web of relationships that define life in the pride, and helps to explain the balance of power between the Marsh Pride and neighbouring prides that is constantly evolving over time.
I particularly love to watch the mothers with their small cubs, to see the affection between the lionesses when they are raising cubs in a creche and their bravery in defending them. Of course, the pride males are magnificent to behold. Lions have taught me so much about life. I love how forthright and honest they are in their dealings with each other.”
