Getting close enough for a good photo can be heart-in-mouth stuff, as they can produce such an explosion of speed.
Their ancestors have been around for millions of years and yet they’re listed as ‘critically endangered’ today, due to humans’ demand for illegal rhino horn.
We – conservationists and supporters worldwide – go to such extraordinary lengths to save them, running marathons, climbing Mount Everest and holding pub quizzes, and, of course, they are blissfully unaware of all these heroic or mundane efforts. If we just left black rhinos alone and gave them suitable and safe habitat, they’d get on perfectly well without us.
