“If you ask me this question one day then again on another day, you are likely to have two different answers. There can never be a constant number one. Historically, though, the animals I’ve enjoyed photographing most are lions.

Lions are easy because they photograph well in all manner of ways, plus they have universal appeal. But more importantly for me it is to show the unique idiosyncrasies of them, for they are not unlike us, each with their own appearances and personalities. Like almost all animals, they are commonly perceived to be of one type or class, rather than as the individuals that they are.

I guess I’ve an understanding of those animals more than I do others too, and familiarity is a factor, as well as anything close to a sixth sense of their behaviour that might be allowed.

Finally, for a photographer they tick the right boxes in terms of appeal and being able to connect with them via our lives with domestic cats.”
