Big 5s

Gordon Buchanan

Cameraman / TV presenter

“There are few species that we share this world with that are not in some way negatively affected by our presence. There are animals driven to extinction and those that are at the very edge. Habitat loss, pollution and climate change have profound effects on the natural world, but one species that I’ve spent time with and love, has the almost unique privilege of being as unaware of humans and the problems we bring as is possible in today’s world.

The Arctic wolves of Canada’s Ellesmere live well within the Arctic Circle. They’re closer to the North Pole than they are to any large city.

Subsequently, many of the wolves there have never seen a human being in their lives. Unaware of the danger we pose as a species, you can get unbelievably close to these remarkable predators. I love that there are still some wild corners of the world where certain animals can live as they always have.

Arctic Wolves would be my Number One on my personal New Big 5 list.”
