Big 5s

“Torn between giraffes, elephants and rhinos, I will settle for rhinos. They might seem relatively calm and boring to shoot, yet when you get to know them better you begin to see the different characters and find the curiosity in them. As soon as you turn your head, they become alive and start messing around with each other. Look back and it’s like nothing ever happened.

Black rhinos are particularly difficult to photograph. They have a very shy nature, yet when you nail it, it’s so fulfilling. Some days, as you surprise one who is hiding behind the bush, they return the favour with the biggest mock charge you have ever come across. The adrenaline pumps through your veins. Deep down you know they are just big bullies and hope that this isn’t that ‘moment’.

I’m still on a mission to capture that emotion in their eyes, but I’m sure it’s a case of “Watch this space…”.”
