Big 5s

Lameck Mkuburo

Director, Tanzanian Elephant Foundation

“Though traditionally I’m a carnivore guy, I became fascinated with elephants and committed to work towards their conservation. This is because the African elephant (Loxodonta Africana) is the largest extant terrestrial mammal in the world.

Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals, and they play an important role as ecosystem engineers.

Elephants form an integral part of the world’s natural and cultural heritage. They feature in our stories and our art, reflecting that people and elephants have co-existed for thousands of years. The ecosystems of the world have co-evolved with elephants; they shaped the savannah and the woodlands, and many of their paths became our roads. To lose our elephants would be to lose a cherished facet of our world and historical identity.”
