Big 5s

“It’s very hard to choose, but as I live in Los Angeles, I’ll have to go with coyotes. They’re such incredible animals. I hear them almost every night, howling and singing and yelling in the canyons where I live, and it’s a constant reminder that I live inches away from wildlife and that technically I’m not at the top of the food chain.

It’s also a reminder that everything in a healthy eco-system works in benign conjunction with everything else in a healthy eco-system, a lesson that we, as humans, have forgotten.

Spending time in wild spaces, or almost-wild spaces, reminds me that we can never ‘triumph’ over nature. We can only hope to live within a system that has the capacity to be self-sustaining.”
