“The leopard without a doubt is my favourite animal to photograph. Growing up in a village of the Eastern Cape, this legend has always had my admiration. Stories were told by the village elders that it existed and yet we never saw it, and it has always been my dream to see one in the wild.
When eventually I saw it 20 years ago, I fell in love but more than that I felt intrigued. I promised myself to track them when I had a chance. Finally, five years ago when I started photography that happened to be the best thing for me because it let me explore and finally show the legend in all his glory.
With its elusive nature, the smooth coat, the powerful head, the striking eyes and the stealth, the master of ambush captivates my spirit more than anything on Earth. Small, yet so powerful, persecuted, yet so successful, even outside protected areas, the leopard for me is a true definition of greatness.
In front of the camera, nothing compares. The colours, the contrast, the ability to shine in any background, whether it be dry winter veld, lush green vegetation or beautiful forests, makes it the perfect subject for me by miles. The leopard has to be the most beautiful animal on Earth.”
