“The giant tortoise is my standout favourite species, having first encountered them on Aldabra in the Seychelles several decades ago.
I was fortunate enough to study these incredible creatures, which have the amazing ability to survive in the most hostile environments, spending long periods without water, and to ‘float’ across vast oceans, which is how they arrived in the only other place they exist today, the Galapagos islands.
Unfortunately, this ability to survive led to their exploitation for food by whalers and pirates, with several species becoming extinct.”
