Big 5s

Shibu Preman

“I was born in Valparai in India, a place tigers, leopards, elephants, lion-tailed macaques and many other animals call ‘home’. Growing up and seeing them was a gift. From that time, the love for tigers has been deep in my heart. When I became a photographer, the love for the animal made me want to photograph and show the beauty of India’s national animal. To help conservation through my images became a big responsibility.

Tigers face many threats to their survival in the wild. Poaching, habitat loss and deforestation have reduced the global population. Tigers are listed as ‘endangered’ on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species, and Malayan and Sumtran tigers are listed as ‘critically endangered’. They face a highly uncertain future.

To save them and celebrate them, my vote is for the tiger. I nominate the tiger as the captain to lead the New Big 5.”
