Big 5s

Director, Giraffe Conservation Foundation

“I just love seeing giraffe in the wild with their goofy faces and elegant gait. They always make me smile. They are just so quintessentially African. Can you imagine a safari in Africa without giraffe?

Most people don’t realise that giraffe are in trouble. There are only about 111,000 giraffe remaining in the wild. We now know that there are four different species of giraffe and at least one of them is in real danger of going extinct during our children’s lifetime.

That is why I think there can never be enough photos of giraffe either. I particularly like pictures taken from unusual angles, such as from the ground and up along their long and gangly legs and necks, close-ups of their prehensile purple tongues or of their unique silhouette on the horizon.”
